2015 Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal and recall information

Volkswagen Admits to Diesel Scandal:

What Drivers Need to Know

Is a Volkswagen recall in the works? If you follow the news, you’ll have heard by now that Volkswagen has admitted to cheating emissions tests in nearly 500,000 vehicles sold in the US over the last seven years. There could be as many as 11 million affected vehicles worldwide. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that Volkswagen has violated Clean Air Act regulations by purposely allowing their vehicles to emit more pollution than is legally allowed. There are many different vehicle models affected (listed below); all of them have a 2.0L or 3.0L diesel engine.

So far, no crashes or injuries have been linked to this deceptive practice; however, damage to consumer trust and potentially to the environment have been reported.

How Volkswagen Misled Customers

The nutshell version of how the scam worked is simple: Volkswagen installed special software in the 2.0L diesel engine vehicles that made it appears as though those models were performing better and getting better fuel economy. In other words, the software made it seem like the vehicles were more fuel-efficient than they actually are. The software basically had two modes: driving mode, and “dyno” mode, which switched on when the car was being tested for emissions.

Why Does it Matter?

Clean-air regulations have been put in place in order to protect the environment, improve air quality, and protect peoples’ health. These laws are designed so that as time passes, they become stricter. This is meant to offset increasing populations and take advantage of technological advances.

In the case of the Volkswagen emissions scandal, the vehicles involved in this recall were found to emit up to 40 times the allowable amount of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), which can contribute to ground-level air pollution. The EPA states that exposure to NOx pollution has been linked to asthma attacks, breathing problems, and in some cases heart problems. The EPA also says children, older people, or people who have pre-existing breathing problems are especially at risk of illness as a result of exposure to NOx pollution.

On top of the potential to make people sick and damage the environment, the Volkswagen diesel scandal make Volkswagens, Audis, and Porsches seem more efficient and environmentally-friendly than they actually are, a violation of trust. Some of the company executives involved in the Volkswagen scandal and recall have been fired, but Volkswagen is only beginning to deal with the problem and it may be a long road ahead.

What Should You Do Now?

The end result of this Volkswagen emissions scandal will likely be a Volkswagen recall, Audi recall, and potentially a Porsche recall as well to fix the problem.

For now, Volkswagen customers with affected vehicles are in a holding pattern. The above-listed vehicles are not considered unsafe because of this scandal, and they are legal to drive as usual. Vehicles affected by Volkswagen’s emissions cheat will eventually be recalled and / or repaired. Models from 2015 or newer will likely only need a quick software update, but pre-2015 models may need additional repairs to bring them up to current emissions standards.

If you own one of the recalled Volkswagen, Audi, or Porsche vehicles involved in the emissions scandal, do nothing: Your vehicle is still considered safe and legal to drive. Proceed as usual, and watch your mailbox for more information about the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal and to find out when your vehicle will be repaired.
